Principle of Silica Gel Desiccant Rotor Dehumidification

Desiccant rotor dehumidification systems represent the most efficient and economical solution for achieving humidity levels below ambient temperature and 50% relative humidity (RH). The core component of this system is a high-efficiency silica gel-impregnated rotor, which is structurally similar to heat recovery rotors but specifically designed for moisture transfer. Structure and Function

The silica gel desiccant rotor is divided into two main sections: the process section and the regeneration section.

  • As the process air, which is the air that needs to be dehumidified, passes through the process section of the rotor, it comes into contact with the silica gel.
  • The silica gel absorbs the moisture from the process air, effectively drying it.
  • The dried air is then delivered to the required space or application, maintaining the desired low humidity levels.

  • To ensure continuous operation, the rotor needs to be regenerated, meaning the absorbed moisture must be removed from the silica gel.
  • This is achieved by heating a separate stream of air, typically taken from outside the controlled environment.
  • The heated air is passed through the regeneration section of the rotor, where it picks up the moisture absorbed by the silica gel.
  • This moist air is then expelled, leaving the silica gel reactivated and ready to absorb more moisture from the process air.

Continuous Operation

The key advantage of the silica gel desiccant rotor system is its ability to operate continuously, maintaining consistent humidity conditions. The rotor rotates slowly, moving sections alternately through the process and regeneration zones. This rotation ensures that the desiccant material is continually reactivated and ready to absorb moisture, providing a steady supply of dry air.
