Temperature and humidity control during eye surgeries is an important factor for a successful operation and the patient’s eye health. The eye has a sensitive structure and requires a regular moisture balance for healthy functioning. During surgical procedures, the moisture layer that naturally forms on the surface of the eye may become watery due to the operation. This may increase the risk of post-operative complications in the cornea and other sensitive tissues and may decrease the efficiency of the operation.

Humidity control maintains the hydration level of the eye during the operation, ensuring the elasticity of the tissues and preserving their sensitivity. Especially in operations involving interventions on the surface of the eye such as laser or lens implantation, keeping the humidity constant at all times allows the operation to be performed properly. High humidity or excessive humidity can negatively affect both the quality of vision and the surgeon’s working sensitivity.

Therefore, in eye surgeries, special humidification devices are used in the winter months and dehumidification units are used in the summer and transition periods to keep the eye surface constantly at a constant humidity value. These devices maintain the ideal moisture level of the eye throughout the operation, minimizing the risk of tissue damage, accelerating the healing process and increasing the patient’s comfort after the operation. Careful control of humidity increases the success of the operation and ensures postoperative eye health.

The solution, the relative humidity inside the eye surgery rooms should be maintained at around 40% RH at 18°C (64°F). Laser manufacturers generally recommend that the humidity in the laser room be maintained between 30 to 40% at 18 to 24°C (64-75°F).
